To get the most out of your skin care products, you should apply them in a specific order. After spending all your hard-earned money on skin care products, you want to make sure you are getting the best use out of them. It is imperative that you use the right layering technique, as it will ensure you get the maximum effect from your products. Some steps are only relevant at night and some products should differ between day and night.
Daily Skin Care Routine
Step 1 – Cleanser
At night it is recommended to double cleanse, especially if you have worn makeup during the day. I love Cailyn Cosmetics Dizzolv’it at the moment. It does exactly what it says, dissolves the makeup even heavy eye makeup right off. I follow it up with Nip + Fab Glycolic Cleanser and Declare Powder Cleanser on alternative nights. In the morning I just use Bioderma Sensibio H2 Micelle water to remove the products applied the night before.
Step 2 – Toner
A lot of people skip this step due to old school toner having high alcohol levels but now you can get a variety that will help restore skin or prevent aging. I use No. 7 Soft and Soothed Gentle Toner. I find that this toner restores my skins moisture balance after cleansing.
Step 3 – Treatments
If you use any special treatments then you need to complete this step now and only at night. I only ever use one treatment at a time but if you need to use more than one, start with medicated one(if using) followed up with the product that has the lighter consistency and so on.
Step 4 – Serum
I generally only use serum at night, however if you have time and wish to use it in the morning you can. I use Nip + Fab Glycolic Serum every second night. I am still on the hunt for an additional one to use on the alternate night. Again choosing a serum is based on your need and skin type. For example, do you want to reduce signs of aging, refine pores or hydrate?
Step 5 – Eye Cream
I only recently added eye cream into my night-time routine, now that I have hit my mid-thirties! At present I am using Ziaja Sage Anti Puff Cream. Looking at recent pictures, I think it is time to move to an anti-wrinkle one.
Step 6 – Moisturize
It is best to use two different types of moisturizer for day and night, the heavier one to be at night. In the morning select a moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type. As I have combination skin, I generally choose an oil free moisturizer and use a more hydrating moisturizer at night. I am using La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat in the morning and I love using Garnier Miracle Sleeping Cream at night for everywhere but my T-Zone.
Step 7 – SPF
Some moisturizer has SPF but like the rest of your body you need to reapply every 2 hours. If you are not wearing makeup, use a face suitable sun screen and if you are wearing makeup there are now a lot of products that can be sprayed on top of your makeup.
Once a Week Add-Ons
Some steps may be added on a weekly basis. An exfoliator/peel should be used after cleansing and if you are using a treatment mask you should apply it between cleansing and toner.
I know you are thinking, this will take me forever but I promise you won’t. For years I was so poor at completing my skin care routine and I certainly was not doing it in the right order! Since I started applying my skin care in this sequence, I have seen a massive improvement. You need to make sure you leave time between applications. You can work this around your morning routine; I cleanse and then wash my teeth, and then apply my toner, get dressed and then apply my moisturizer. At night I have more time to complete the additional steps but again I give it ample time between applications.
